Lenten Devotionals Week Two

For the second week of Lent I would like to focus on Sacrifice.

As children, Catholics learn to give something up for Lent. The sacrifices during Lent are penance, in the spirit of the Ninehvites that repented at the preaching of Jonah. Throughout history, Christians have found fasting, prayer, and almsgiving to be an essential part of repentance and renewal.

We are not required to do anything beyond the requirements of fasting; however, the sacrifices and extra things we do during Lent help us grow closer to God. It is not necessary to be perfect, but we should put forth a reasonable effort.

Do you need a different idea on how to sacrifice, or do penance, this Lent? Below are some ideas that are often overlooked.

  • Sacrifice your time by volunteering at a soup kitchen or animal shelter.
  • Donate one item for each day of Lent to a local homeless shelter or thrift store.
  • Donate money to a charity.
  • Perform an act of kindness each day of Lent.
  • Write a letter to a loved one each day of Lent.

What will you sacrifice this Lent?

Peace and Blessings,
Fr. John Pfannenstiel, OFM Cap.
