Even before Capuchin missionaries from the US went to Puerto Rico, four friars were sent to China in the early 1900s. Journals kept by those missionaries speak of unbelievable challenges. Two US Capuchin missionaries died in China of typhoid. In 1949 the communists expelled the friars. However, in recent years a small group of Capuchin friars was established “incognito.” They teach the faith, administer the sacraments and provide help when they can. They may not publicly and freely practice their faith. It is gratifying to see that more than several young men in China have requested to become Capuchin friars. Their studies will be long and difficult. The Capuchin friars of the Philippines have been designated to oversee the small community of friars in China. With only limited resources, the Philippine Capuchins can count on help from the Seraphic Mass Association.
